Wade Guyton (’95)

Category: Accomplished Alumni | Awards

Wade Guyton, the first University of Tennessee, Knoxville, alumnus to have work featured in the prestigious Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, recently was honored by having a collection of more than ten years of his work on exhibit at that world-renowned venue. His work is now also part of the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
“Wade is a leader in the art community,” said Dottie Habel, director of the UT School of Art. “His knowledge, experience, and placement within the art world open doors of opportunity for current and future students and faculty at UT.”

Entitled ‘Wade Guyton: OS,’ which employs the common acronym for a computer’s ‘operating system,’ the exhibition displayed at the Whitney explores our changing relationships to images and artworks through the use of common digital technologies. The work purposefully misuses these technologies to create beautifully misprinted photos and blurred images that relate to our daily lives. The exhibition confronted viewers with a dramatic, non-chronological design of staggered rows of parallel walls resembling layered pages of a book.

Guyton’s work includes paintings, drawings, photography, and sculpture.

A recent New York Times article reviewing the exhibit called Guyton a “cause for optimism,” saying, “Yes, interesting art is being made here and now.”

Guyton has maintained strong ties with UT. He has recommended artists to participate in its highly competitive Artist-in-Residence (AiR) program and in exhibitions at the Ewing Gallery and the UT Downtown Gallery. Recently, he has agreed to produce and lead the Limited Edition Art Box Series, a fundraising effort to endow the AiR program.

Guyton graduated magna cum laude in the College Scholars Program, receiving his bachelor’s in arts & sciences from UT in 1995. He received a master’s in fine art from Hunter College in 1998 and is now living and working in New York City.
