The Roots and Relationships of PYA

Category: News

Founded by two UT alumni in 1983, today PYA serves clients in all 50 states from offices in seven cities. PYA provides tax, audit and assurance, strategic planning, management consulting, and business advisory services including assistance with mergers and acquisitions, valuation, compliance, and operations – Did we mention they’re also our alumni corporate partner?

Led by President and CEO Marty Brown (’85), who joined the firm in 1991, PYA serves some of the nation’s largest and most well-known brands. For nearly a decade, the firm has been ranked by Accounting Today as one of the Top 100 CPA firms in the nation, one of the Top 10 firms in the Southeast, and the second largest by revenue in Tennessee. Forbes lists PYA as one of America’s Best Tax and Accounting Firms—the only firm on the Forbes list headquartered in Knoxville and one of only six in Tennessee. PYA also is consistently ranked as a Top 20 healthcare consulting firm in the U.S. by Modern Healthcare.

“PYA’s success can be attributed first and foremost to our people, many of whom are nationally ranked experts, and to their focus on service,” Brown said. “PYA’s team is focused more on building relationships with our clients every day, rather than conducting transactions. Like true Volunteers, we say PYA people ‘Serve to Solve,’—an authentic approach to our work and service to our communities across the country. We are dedicated to finding solutions.”

As evidence of “Serve to Solve” in action, PYA colleagues individually support more than 100 philanthropic organizations across the country annually, and the firm itself supports dozens of causes. Locally, PYA has been a decades-long supporter of UT Knoxville and the Haslam College of Business. Its leaders serve on advisory boards and speak often in the classroom. Most recently, PYA began a partnership with the UT Office of Alumni Relations in developing the Rocky Top Business Awards. Additionally, PYA is a top recruiter of UT graduates; in fact, 30% of PYA’s team members across the country are UT alumni.

In a reflection of its entrepreneurial roots, PYA launched Teknovation.biz in 2013, a daily summary of news highlighting technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship in our region. Led by PYA’s Chief Alliance Officer Tom Ballard (‘69), Teknovation.biz has a national following. The PYA Ballard Innovation Award, the largest gift of cash and in-kind services available to East Tennessee entrepreneurs and startups, is awarded each year to celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit. PYA plays other entrepreneurial roles with affiliated firms, RTG, PYA Waltman, Crux Strategies, and Intuitive MB.

PYA’s roots and its headquarters remain solidly on Rocky Top and its support of UT remains steadfast.
