One of the earliest graduates of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s College of Architecture and Design in 1971, Jim Hastings, AIA, LEED AP, has set a standard of excellence with the Nashville-based firm that bears his name, Hastings Architecture.
Together with his late wife, Jeannie, who also graduated from UT, Hastings has employed numerous UT graduates over the years and also established a scholarship that has made it possible for nearly two dozen students to study in the College of Architecture and Design.
In presenting Hastings with the Accomplished Alumni Award on October 1, Dean Scott Poole of the College of Architecture and Design credited Hastings with setting an example of what one can achieve with a UT education.
“Jim did more than start a business,” Poole said in presenting the award. “He started a business underpinned by his deep commitment to the community and the University of Tennessee—a firm that produces award-winning and thoughtful architecture that impacts lives throughout Tennessee and beyond.”
Poole also thanked Hastings for his civic involvement through the college’s advocacy board, UT Alumni Board of Governors, UT Development Council, and as Chair of the President’s Club.
“Jim, we are grateful for what you have done for UT, for the College of Architecture and Design, and for our students,” Poole added. “We applaud the example you have set for architecture in our state and beyond and the integrity you instilled in your firm. You have brought great pride to our university, and for that, we thank you.”
Now retired, Hastings is enjoying life knowing the firm is in good hands. Management of Hastings Architecture was taken over by his son, William (’94) in the chief executive officer role, and UT alumni David Bailey (’93) and Chuck Gannaway (’94) as principles along with David Powell.
Hastings grew up in Milan, Tennessee, which is also the hometown of two former UT presidents: Andy Holt and Eli Fly.
Hastings Architecture has employed many other UT graduates, and for eight consecutive years has been named an Emerging Professional Friendly Firm by the Tennessee Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Additionally, the firm is consistently recognized nationally for its work and progressive culture. In 2019, ARCHITECT magazine named Hastings Architecture the #3 architecture firm in the United States on the journal’s annual ARCHITECT 50 ranking. Hastings Architecture also has been recognized for eight consecutive years as a Tennessean Top Workplace.
