Mike Fitts was a distinguished architect, military veteran, and dedicated public servant whose career left a lasting imprint on Tennessee’s built environment. His 39-year tenure as the State Architect of Tennessee saw the realization of landmark projects, including the Legislative Plaza, Tennessee Performing Arts Center, and Bicentennial Mall, which stand as testaments to his vision and expertise.

Beyond his architectural contributions, Fitts was a leader in the profession, earning Fellowship in the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in 1991 and receiving multiple accolades, such as the AIA Thomas Jefferson Award for public architecture and the AIA Tennessee Samuel Morgan Lifetime Achievement Award. His influence extended beyond design, shaping architectural governance and development in the state.

Fitts’ multifaceted education in engineering, architecture, and law underscores his depth of knowledge, while his service as a U.S. Navy SEAL reflects a life of discipline and commitment.
