2025 Alumni Promise Award Winner

Michael Gomez exemplifies the Volunteer spirit through his outstanding contributions to manufacturing research, workforce development, and community engagement. As Director of Manufacturing Research and Technology at MSC Industrial Supply Co., Gomez leads transformative initiatives that connect advanced research with real-world manufacturing solutions, driving innovation across the industry. 

A proud alumnus of the Tickle College of Engineering, Gomez holds a PhD in mechanical engineering. His academic and professional excellence has earned him national recognition, including being named a Manufacturing USA Modern Maker,SME Media 30 Under 30 honoree, and recipient of the Sandra L. Bouckley Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award. 

Gomez played a key role in operationalizing the Machine Tool Research Center at TN MADE in partnership with UT, giving students hands-on access to state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies. His research innovations include the development of low-cost dynamic-force measurement tools and pioneering work in hybrid manufacturing for aerospace and defense applications.

Beyond his technical achievements, Gomez is deeply committed to education and outreach. He serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Manufacturing Processes and is an active member of SME’s Technical Community Committee. He founded Manufacturing Day events at the UT Machine Tool Research Center, annually welcoming hundreds of local high school students for immersive career exploration. He also supports the SEC Machining Competition, America’s Cutting Edge Program, and FIRST Robotics, while mentoring UT graduate students and providing access to advanced equipment and industry insight.
