Mark L. Garrell (’86)

Colonel Mark Garrell graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1985 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Defense Artillery Corps. As a Divisional Short Range Air Defense officer, he served two operational assignments in the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and two operational assignments in the 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized).

As a staff officer, Garrell served multiple tours in Washington, DC in the Army’s Personnel Command and Pentagon staff. He is a survivor of the 9/11 terrorist attack on the Pentagon. As a Congressional Fellow, he attended the Government Affairs Institute, Georgetown University and later served as a legislative assistant for US Senator Jim Bunning on Capitol Hill.

olonel Garrell served as Commander, 1st Battalion, 3rd Air Defense Artillery Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized). In 2003, he led his battalion during the opening days of Operation Iraqi Freedom attacking from Kuwait to Karbala, Iraq. During the final attack on Baghdad, he commanded a Task Force of over 750 soldiers. For his gallantry in combat, he was awarded the Silver Star Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Combat Action Badge, and his battalion was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation.

After retirement, Garrell served in senior leadership positions in two defense aerospace industry companies before founding the Garrell Realty Group LLC. The Garrell Team is ranked in the top 1 percent of all real estate teams in the United States.

Garrell and his wife, Jean, reside in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
