James I. Newsome III earned a BS in logistics and transportation in 1976 and an MBA in 1977 from the Haslam College of Business.
Newsome served as executive vice president of Nedlloyd and was later promoted to president, overseeing all of North and Latin America and the transatlantic trade, along with other senior management responsibilities. In 1997 he became senior vice president of Hapag-Lloyed (America) and was later promoted to president. Following his time at Hapag-Lloyed, he entered his current position as CEO and president of the South Carolina Ports Authority in 2009, where he has overseen record growth in the volume shipped through the state’s ports.
Newsome serves on the Dean’s Advisory Council and the Global Supply Chain Institute Advisory Board through the Haslam College of Business. He has served on the Board of Governors of the College of Charleston School of Business and was a member of the Champions Committee for the 2012 PGA Tournament on Kiawah Island, South Carolina. He is a member of the Haslam College of Business 1914 Society and Archway Society.
Newsome was named the 2014 Public Servant of the Year by the South Carolina Chamber and the 2016 Person of the Year by the Agriculture Transportation Coalition.
