COL Gass graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in March 1980 and was commissioned as a Field Artillery second lieutenant. After flight training, he was assigned within the Aviation Corps. He served in various Artillery and Aviation command and staff positions.
COL Gass served as Commander, 101st Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division. As the commander in 2003, he led his 2000 soldier brigade during the first days of Operation Iraqi Freedom and throughout the Division’s 14 month sustained combat tour. He also commanded the 2nd Battalion, 101st Aviation Brigade from 1998 to 2000. His final assignment was as Deputy Director of Army Aviation in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff G-3/5/7.
COL Gass, following retirement from active duty, led the General Electric Aviation’s strategic US military customer program. His primary responsibility was integrating and aligning GE’s military program with all US military services.
COL Gass will retire from GE Aviation later this year. He resides with his wife, Valerie, in Knoxville.
