Chris and Watty Hall are lifelong champions of education, philanthropy, and community engagement whose shared commitment to UT has left a legacy across the state.
Chris, a Memphis native, came to UT in 1975 to study English literature, inspired by his high school teachers and the exceptional faculty at UT. After earning his law degree from the University of Memphis while working multiple jobs, he built a successful legal career in Knoxville and Collierville, Tennessee, practicing for over 40 years. A Collierville native and also a UT graduate of English literature, Watty launched a successful retail business, The Brooks Collection, which has thrived for more than two decades. She also manages a working farm and serves on several civic boards, including the Historic District Commission and Main Street Collierville.
Together, Chris and Watty have been tireless supporters of UT. Chris was a founding member of the Friends of English advisory board in 2014 and has remained its most dedicated member, mentoring faculty, hosting gatherings, and championing the department’s mission. Watty has been a true partner in these efforts, engaging with students and faculty, and sharing her passion for literature and lifelong learning.
Their generosity culminated in a gift to establish the Hall Professorship in American Literature—an investment in future generations of students and scholars. They have also supported UT Athletics, the College of Arts and Sciences, and UTIA, embodying the Volunteer spirit in every sense.
In 2014, the College of Arts and Sciences honored them with the Philanthropy Award. Today, their legacy continues to inspire hope, connection, and excellence across the UT community.
