Young Alumni Enjoy BBQ

FALL 2009 YOUNG ALUMNI WEEKEND

More than 120 young alums and their guests gathered on Rocky Top to take part in the 2009 fall Young Alumni Weekend, which took place on October 2-3.

On Friday, October 2, the Young Alumni Council held its fall business meeting at the Howard H. Baker Center for Public Policy. During the council’s meeting, Young Alumni Council President David Leaverton presented UT Knoxville Chancellor Jimmy Cheek a check for the inaugural Young Alumni Scholarship, which was awarded for the first time this fall. The scholarship is awarded to a UT graduate who is pursuing his or her graduate degree at UT Knoxville.

Later, on a picture-perfect east Tennessee fall evening, young alumni gathered on the UT Visitors Center South Lawn for “BBQ, Bluegrass, and Bruce.” Tennessee Men’s Head Basketball Coach Bruce Pearl spoke to the young alums as they dined on barbeque and listened to live bluegrass music, played by local band Will Tate & Friends.

The weekend was capped off with the annual Young Alumni tailgate party, which took place at the Tyson Alumni House before the Vols’ home football game against SEC rival Auburn. Young alums from around the region enjoyed heavy hors d'oeuvres, drinks and plenty of pre-game excitement in anticipation for that night’s clash between the Vols and the Tigers.
