2009 ALUMNI SUMMER COLLEGE
This Year's Theme—Food for Thought!
In July, 134 alumni and friends representing 12 different states gathered in Knoxville to participate in the 28th annual Alumni Summer College. Alumni Summer College is a Lifelong Learning program that the Office of Alumni Affairs has been hosting since 1982, when the World’s Fair was in Knoxville. The event is an opportunity to return to campus for five days filled with fun, fellowship, and outstanding presentations by UT faculty, staff, and other experts on topics related to the program theme. The 2009 theme was “Food for Thought.” Highlights from this year’s event included:
- An opening reception and dinner on Wednesday evening at the Marriott Hotel. UT alumnus Alan Wilson delivered the keynote speech and was honored as an Accomplished Alumnus. Wilson is the chairman, president, and CEO of McCormick and Company Inc.
- A field trip to Blackberry Farm in Walland and lunch at the RT Lodge in Maryville.
- A field trip to the Bush Brothers’ plant in Dandridge and lunch at Regas in Knoxville.
- A tour of the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy followed by dinner and a wine tasting at The Foundry in Knoxville.
- Presentations by UT faculty members:
- Dr. William Morris: “In a Perfect World Everyone Would Have a Glass of Wine Every Evening”
- Dr. David Golden: “You Mean You Eat That?!”
- Dr. Ann Draughon: “Eating Safely in an Unsafe World”
- Dr. John Mount: “Hands-on Food Science”
- Dr. Sharon Thompson: “The Potential for Food Terrorism”
- Dr. Daniel De La Torre Ugarte: “The Food vs. Fuel Dilemma – Challenge or Opportunity”
- Dr. Jay Whelan: “Fish as a Functional Food: Are the Healthy Claims a Little ‘Fishy’?”
- The annual “Lunch with the Deans,” where guests heard updates about their respective colleges.
- A field trip to the Biltmore in Asheville, N.C., for a tour and lunch.
- Dinner catered by Calhoun’s at the East Tennessee Historical Center in Knoxville.
- A farewell brunch at the Marriott.
If you missed this year’s event, plan now for next year! The 2010 Alumni Summer College will be held July 28–August 1 next year. More information will be available in the fall related to the 2010 program.
